Complete Guide to Story Book Birth Photography
Everything you need to know about documenting your birth.
Real. Raw. Beautiful. Intimate.
The birth of your baby only happens one time and there are no do-overs.
You’ll tell the story of your child’s(children’s) birth while catching up with an old friend over a cup of tea. You’ll tell it while cradling the phone in your hand, to loved ones who wish they could be there to celebrate with you. You’ll share it with other mothers, bonding over the incredibly special, yet unifying experience of birth. You’ll whisper it to yourself in those dark, quiet moments when you need to be reminded just what you’re capable of.
And one day, you’ll tell it to your little one—their warm body snuggled up close to yours, their sweet face turned up to look at you, asking “Mama, how did I get here?”
You’ll pull out a book filled with beautiful photos, put on their birth movie, and tell your child a story of longing, wonder, courage, amazement and joy. When you first realized that life was beginning inside you. The sudden flutter of tiny feet. The lovely curve of your growing belly. The incredible connection between you and your birth partner. The moments that felt like they would never end, and the ones that you wished never would. The raw strength of your body and mind as they worked together to bring your baby earthside. The pure glow of love when you first met your little one. The intimacy of your family’s first days at home.
The journey to motherhood is a story you are writing not only for your family and your child, but also for yourself. A story filled with moments that pass by before you can even realize just how precious they are. As your photographer, I’ll be there to capture your story. Those sacred moments of pregnancy, birth and motherhood will be preserved so you can relive the experience—and tell your story again and again.

CHOOSING TO DOCUMENT YOUR BIRTH STORY IS SOMETHING FAMILIES NEVER REGRET. I BELIEVE THAT BIRTH IS ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL AND LIFE-CHANGING EVENTS YOUR FAMILY WILL EXPERIENCE. BIRTH IS WORTH DOCUMENTING, REMEMBERING, AND TREASURING.
I am so happy to have you here. As a mother of two children and a birth photographer for 3 years, I know the importance of capturing the beauty and realness of birth. The birth of my children were some of the most amazing days of my life. Birth photography in this area in 2015 wasn’t something that most photographers offered however a local professional newborn photographer and a sweet friend of mine was willing to be my son’s birth photographer, which was something I am so glad I invested into. However, with my daughter, my husband and I were on a super tight budget and wasn’t able to afford birth photography. I had a photographer whom I had captured weddings with before, who wanted to trade me sessions in order to photograph the birth of my daughter. I thought that sounded perfect, since she seemed like a very trustworthy source. However, Madylin decided to enter the world a lot faster than her big brother and since my photographer wasn’t a professional birth photographer, Madylin’s birth was missed. And still to this day, my heart breaks for not taking the time to hire a professional photographer.
Because of my own experience, I truly value the importance of what Birth Photography represents and to be not just your photographer, but a part of your birthing team. I also offer payment plans and I also put together a “Birth Photography Gift Registry” (That I will explain more later). I believe that each and every type of birth is worth documenting, whether it is a home birth with midwives or a planned cesarean section in hospital with obstetricians.
Birth photography is a growing movement. As one of Somerset’s leading birth photographers, I've captured numerous births in Somerset, Stanford, and Lexington. I've documented birth stories in hospitals & birth centers, however it is on my bucket list to capture a birth at a client’s home. My goal is to tell your story as it unfolds...giving you tangible memories from one of the most important days of your life. When we decide to work together, I spend time talking to you and your family. I want your birth story to reflect your unique beauty as a family. Each story is different, and I work to capture all the little details that makes your day yours.
With my extensive training as a birth photographer, I approach each birth space with respect. I quietly work around my couples so as not to disturb the birth process or the birth professionals caring for them.
Below are some of my own images of the birth of my son and some fresh moment’s that my Husband was able to capture of my daughter after she was born. (Her birth story was super crazy and I hope to blog it soon. I am sure I will share my own birth stories with you when we meet <3 ) I feel it’s important to share my own documented stories, because you will be welcoming me to witness such a vulnerable and raw experience for you and your partner, it is only fair that I show you some of my own. Birth is unbelievably beautiful. Be prepared to discover just how much your heart can grow and how incredibly strong you are!
Below is a Gallery of some of my favorite Birth & Fresh 48 photographs that I have captured through the years. It is linked directly to the portfolio gallery on my website. If you’d rather see the images spread out and easier to see as a whole, you can click HERE.
8 reasons to hire a birth photographer
1. The tenderness between partners is documented.
This love is raw and strong and often not caught on camera. There is so much REAL love, REAL emotion and REAL passion.
But not just documenting the love your share with your partner, but I will be able to document your birth team and the support from those who are there with you along the stages of your labor and delivery.
2. Women’s bodies are miraculous!
While you are in labor, you are in YOUR ZONE. You are focused and you don’t truly realize how incredible you are until someone shows you what you have accomplished.
3. That reaction of meeting your babe is EVERYTHING!
You only get this moment ONCE and you will look back on it forever and be flooded with memories and all your feelings will rush back to you. This is real, raw, and an honest reflection of your and your partner’s truest emotions.
4. It’s the partner’s turn to bond.
This special moment is one of my favorites. Watching your partner connect with the baby for the very first time…enjoying and memorizing everything about this sweet little person.
5. The first time you get to nurse.
This magical memory is a time full of wonder, excitement, and euphoria. Document as you bond with your baby for the first time. That first latch is such a victorious feeling. AND I am a experienced breastfeeding mama and am happy to help guide you through it all. You will not feel alone and you will not regret having this moment captured forever.
6. All of the little details.
While the baby is being weighted, measured, washed, or anything in between, mama is usually being taken care of as well. During this time, I can capture those details for you. The little dimples on their bums, their tiny feet, and the way they fit so perfectly in your arms. The tiny details in the room.
But not only the details of your babies’ first moments, but even before your baby has become earth side, I can capture those who were waiting right along side you, moment’s of your laboring, and the love and support from your birth team.
7. Your Baby!
Your baby will begin to change within hours…capture the way they were when you first locked eyes, as they instinctively crawled to the breast, the creamy vernix covering their tiny body, as they grasp so tightly to you knowing you will love and protect them.
8. Having your child(ren) meet their sibling for the first time.
This moment is something you will treasure forever. Their smiling faces, their shyness to meeting such a tiny human, and the emotions shared between your little family. You will cherish this moment for as long as you live. Trust me, it is something I as a mother of two, am so thankful to have captured. (Brings me to tears as I type and think about it)
Quick Tips
Keep your photographer updated
In the weeks surrounding your due date, contact your photographer a LOT. Reach out to me after every doctor or midwife appointment to update me on any changes (cervical, health, birth plans, emotional, etc.) The more I know, the more prepared I will be to arrive at the perfect time and to document your birth in a way that authentically speaks to YOU.
Have your birth bag prepared
The one thing that we can always rely on during labor is that birth is unpredictable! Please make sure your birth bag Is ready to go in advance with everything you may need. If you need help with this, just ask. I am always here to help you with anything at all.
Timing
Time your contractions! Then labor begins, make sure you’re timing your contractions so you have a better understanding of where you are at during labor and then to call me to join you. I will most likely arrive when you are in active labor…contractions being 5-6 minutes apart and lasting one minute in length with increasing intensity where you can no longer speak during each surge. Remember, I will need about one hour notice (Depending on where you are delivering, sometimes I will need 2 hours or sometimes I will even grab a hotel room near by This is something we can discuss in person/phone conversation). So make sure my contact information is saved in both your and your partners phones, so someone can be on “contact the photographer” duty!
Lighting
Birth can occur at any point in the day or night…which makes it one of my greatest challenges. Many women like to give birth in a dark environment and while my camera equipment can handle low lighting situations, I still need SOME light to capture those incredible moments. I may make some small adjustments if I feel there isn’t enough light in your birthing space. If this bothers you, please let me know (I will ask beforehand). I do have an external flash that can be used in times when little to no light is provided, however this is something I like to try and avoid using as much as possible. I feel flashes are very distracting and some doctors/midwives can become frustrated at me when using one. However I do bring one just in case.
How to prepare your birth space
Create your safe space
Whether you are at home or in a hospital, create a space that you are comfortable in. Bring in objects that hold special meaning to you- special cushions, birthing ball, positive birthing affirmations, music, essential oils, ect.
Dim your lights
Dim lights help you to stay calm, increases melatonin which in turn helps you relax in between surges, and releases tension in the body. Hang some string lights or light some candles. I will be able to document regardless of dim lights. Your comfort is just as important as saving these moments forever. We must communicate to one another when this is addresses.
Birth support
Have a loving birth team that will support you and provide GOOD VIBES ONLY! Family, your doula (if you have one), and other children should only be present if they don’t stress you out and create more anxiety for you. A negative energy will decrease your oxytocin, which you need to keep labor going!
Decluttering
Clearing out your birth space in advance will calm your mind while you labor and help you feel at ease.
What to wear
We are creating a memory of your favorite day. I want you to choose clothing that reflects who you are as a person and makes you feel confident and beautiful. The following are my personal recommendations and I am happy to help you select the best clothing for your birth.
Suggestions
Beautiful and sexy bras, lacy bralaettes or solid colored sports bras that are easy to get off are a great option to wear while you labor. That way you feel gorgeous and when baby arrives, it is easy to remove for skin to skin and breastfeeding.
Avoid nude or white bras or panties if you are not wanting anything to be see through. Once you get into the water of a laboring/birthing tub (if you choose this option), all modesty is gone. Unless your ok with that, Whatever you are comfortable in is going to be the best option.
Have a backup bra available- after it gets wet from a tub, shower, or sweat; you might want to change so you stay warm then you are out of the water. Some hospitals will have a birthing tub or allow you to labor in a shower. Most of the Birthing Center’s do provide this option always. Or if you are delivering at home, a birthing tub is always an option as well. Having the warmth and comfort of water can be a huge help during labor.
Choose a neutral colored bra/panty set (black, plum, marron) that isn’t too “loud” so it doesn’t distract from your beautiful images.
If you are birthing at a hospital, and want to opt out of the hospital gowns, you can find some beautiful birthing gowns for easy access.
Waterproof mascara helps if you don’t want a black tear-streaked face.
Messy buns and side braids keep hair off your face.
For the dads: V-neck t-shirts or something casual in solid neutral colors. Avoid baseball caps if you are comfortable with that so your face is not hidden by large shadows.
These are by no means rules and if you have more eclectic tastes and love lots of color I encourage you to put in as much of your personality into your clothing selection as possible.
Try to avoid: large logos, neon colors, and large text.
Many clients will bring meaningful items or jewelry. These are not only provide amazing stories for you to tell your children in the years to come, but they can make your photographs really pop.
I encourage both of you and your partner to pick out a separate set of clothes that can be worn after birth. Giving birth can be messy, and you may want to change out of what you’ve been wearing. Some people have purchased pretty robes that coordinates with something their partner or other children will wear. Those first family photos can be priceless. But at the end of it all, remember that what you wear matters far less than what you experience. Don’t stress too much about clothing!
If you need any assistance, I am always happy to help.
Understanding the Cost of Birth Photography
Birth Documentation takes experience and knowledge of the birthing process. Over the past couple of years that I have been documenting births, I can't even tell you the number of times I have received an inquiry for birth photography services and have had families that are a bit shocked at the investment. Some people think having your birth documented is just like any typical family portrait session and while I totally understand that we all have different financial priorities, I wanted to educate you on WHY we charge what we charge.
FIRST I want to talk about wedding photography.... another HUGE milestone in your life that the average couple spends between $2500-$3500 to document your special day. Now, pretend a client called up a potential wedding photographer and said:
"Hi there, I'm looking for a photographer to document our wedding. I'm not totally sure when it will be... but it'll probably be within a 3 week window. I also don't know what time it will be at... it could be in the middle of the night OR it might be in the day, but I'll call you when it all starts happening and you MUST be here within the hour. You also might be there for 4 hours or potentially 24 hours? You won't have a ton of room to move around and you'll have to be super creative with your angles to ensure you aren't in any medical professional's way. There might be zero lights and just a couple candles as well... I hope that's ok? AND you may go home with someone's bodily fluids on you? Are you available?”
Now, I LOVE what I do, and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world... but it comes at a cost. What a lot of people don't realize is the amount of work that is required to document your birth. With my package prices, I have accounted for: my cost of doing business, my experience and equipment, your on-call period, the hours of attendance, and the image processing time.
Knowledge: I have covered many births ranging from hospital, epidural, cesarean, and birth center. I have no captured any home births but I am 100% prepared to do so through my education on workshops and mentoring from other professionals.
Preparation: I have equipment prepared for any lighting situation, with backups of each, in the case of any technical difficulties. I work with professional equipment, and you will never have to worry about changing your preferred lighting to accommodate me. Because I do have children, I also have my husband on stand by during your on call period, to avoid any mishaps.
On Call Period: Any time I book a family for birth documentation, I go on call at 37 weeks. This means I do not have any contracted events scheduled that would cause me to miss your birth. I also do not travel during this time.
Peace of mind: By hiring a professional, you can be assured that the images from your birth will be quality, well taken images that you will be proud to show off for generations and generations. You can focus on giving birth and your partner can focus on being your support. I can separate myself from the chaos and emotion enough to continue photographing with a focused mind, never missing any important moments.
Time: The shortest birth I have attended was 4 hours. In most cases, birth is never a quick event. I can spend up to 17 hours with you and your family, but the end result is so worth it. The emotion and love I capture during this time is worth every minute away from my own family. The long hours of this type of work take passion and dedication. I also capture your baby’s first hour after birth.
Images/Processing: It takes about 2-4 weeks to go through each image, adding adjustments, or color toning as needed. Once I leave the birth, the job has not yet ended. I still have a lot of work to do.
Birth FAQ’s
WHY HIRE A BIRTH PHOTOGRAPHER?
Birth is one of the most important, most beautiful and most transformative experiences you will experience in life. The day your baby is born can never be recreated and the memories are ones that will be cherished forever. Birth Photography is the very first gift you will give your baby and one that will only increase in value with time. Additionally, Birth Photography is also a gift that can be shared with siblings, grandparents and extended family too.
OK OK I AM INTERESTED BUT HOW DOES THIS ALL WORK?
I join you at your birth, day or night and capture your story every step of the way. My focus is on the love and connection between you, your partner and your baby. I will capture the big moments and all the small ones in-between. I love the big details that you might remember and I also love all the small details that without imagery will be easily forgotten or missed. I will capture the moments you close your eyes to rest and the moments your power is shining so bright. I will capture the way your partner supports you and cares for you. I will capture the feeling, the mood and the energy of the space. When baby arrives I will be there to capture all the firsts. First looks, first breath, first cry, first time opening eyes, first latch, cord cutting…. the firsts go on and on and often there is a first kiss between parents too! I am there for 1-2 hours after birth to capture all the freshest moments….The way yours and your partners eyes light up with love and admiration for this new little life you created and just met, the quiet skin to skin moments, the newborn exam, their perfect tiny fingers, tiny toes and so much more.
IS BIRTH PHOTOGRAPHY FOR US?
Yes it is. It really is for everyone. I document all births whether they are planned for home, birth centre or hospital. All birth stories are so incredibly beautiful. Let me tell the story of your baby’s birth by using my art and creating beautiful professional images.
CAN YOU TELL ME A BIT MORE ABOUT WHAT MAKES YOU A PROFESSIONAL?
I attend your birth with only one purpose and one agenda. I use my skills, creativity and years of experience to capture and create beautiful and professional images that tell the story of one of the most important days of your lives. I am completely committed to you and I guarantee that I will show up to your birth whether it be day or night. In the rare event that something prevents me from attending your birth I have can have an equally professional backup photographer ready to be arranged. It has taken me years of learning, growing, practice, research, workshops and of course dedication and passion to be ready to launch my business offering Birth Photography professionally. I am comfortable with all birth whether it is hospital, home or birth centre. I am passionate and dedicated to my work and I pour my heart into documenting this day for you. I carry professional equipment including 2 professional camera bodies and numerous lenses.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN OFFERING YOUR SERVICES AND HOW MANY BIRTHS HAVE YOU ATTENDED?
I started my business back in 2015 and have been attending births in and around Somerset ever since. I have attended 6 beautiful births. I believe all births are so beautiful, so powerful and so very worthy of being documented.
WHEN DO YOU GO CALL ON AND WHAT EXACTLY DOES THIS MEAN?
I go on call when you are 37 weeks pregnant and stay on call right until it is baby time. Once I am on call for you my phone is on 24/7. I am not more than 1 hour away from your planned place of birth and I am not participating in activities that could prevent me from attending your birth.
WHEN DO YOU ARRIVE?
As your birth photographer, I will join you when you are in ACTIVE labour and while every birth is different, this "typically" is when your contractions are approximately 5 minutes apart, lasting one minute in length with increasing intensity where you are struggling to move or talk through your contractions. If you are having cervical checks, you might be around 5-6cm dilated at this time.
HOW LONG DO YOU STAY?
The beautiful thing about birth, is that every story is different. No two births will be the same! Some will be short and some will be long. I will stay the entire duration of your labour and approximately 2 hours after baby is born. This allows time for first snuggles, skin-to-skin, breastfeeding to start, meeting of siblings, and the newborn exam to document baby's weight and height.
HOW MANY CLIENTS DO YOU TAKE A MONTH?
Since birth can be so unpredictable, I like to only take one to two births per month. I want to ensure that you receive my full time and support.
WHAT IF I WANT TO LABOUR IN THE DARK?
Many women like to give birth in a dark environment. My camera is equipped to handle low light situations. That being said, I do need SOME light to capture those incredible moments. If I feel like there isn’t enough light in your birth space, I may make some small adjustments. If these bother you, please let me know. During birth in low lighting, I will often bounce my flash off the ceiling so I can capture the quick and fleeting moments of birth. My external flash is very different from the flashes that most people are accustomed to. The flash will never be directed near or towards your face and most of my clients aren’t even aware that I’m using it.
HOW MANY IMAGES DO YOU DELIVER AND WHEN DO I RECEIVE THEM?
Every birth and birth story is unique but generally I deliver between 100 to 300, just basically all of the best image I can capture personally hand edited digital images. I send over a few sneak peek within 48 hours of birth. Your finally gallery will be ready within 3-4 weeks. Every client that books for full birth story photography will receive a beautiful branded wood USB with their entire gallery safely stored.
WILL YOU SHARE THE IMAGES ON SOCIAL MEDIA?
I love to share beautiful images of birth but if you prefer to keep some or all images private I will always respect your wishes. Every single image you have seen of my work has been pre-approved for sharing. You may have noticed that I am not sharing images or blogging births for weeks after baby has arrived. This is because enjoying your new baby and settling into your new groove is so much more important than reviewing images. When you’re feeling ready just let me know. I do always send over a few sneak peeks within 48 hours of birth so you can use these images to announce your new addition online and share with family and friends as you wish. If you permit me to share some of these great I would of course love to.
WHEN SHOULD I BOOK?
As soon as you’re ready! I usually hear from clients in their first trimester however I have had some people book very last minute. If I am fully booked for their birth month I love to refer on to other Birth Photographers I know of in near by counties. I take 1-2 clients per month on a first come first serve basis.
WHY SHOULD I HIRE YOU WHEN I CAN TAKE PHOTOS WITH MY PHONE?
As a professional photographer, I have spent many years perfecting my skills. My gear can handle extreme low light, awful hospital lighting and I know how to change my settings quickly when a situation changes. As an experienced Mother and birth photographer, I also know the birthing process and how to respect your sacred birth space. I know where to be and when. I document how your entire story unfolds and include beautiful images of everyone involved in your birth story.
WHAT IF YOU MISS MY BIRTH OR GET SICK?
As a respected and professional birth photographer, I work closely with a few other local photographers and can call for my backup to join you. In the case, where you just have a precipitous (VERY rapid) birth, I will still arrive at your birthing location to join you to take photos and we will arrange to set up a Fresh 48 session (within the first day or two of birth in hospital or at home) or an in-home newborn session.
DO YOU OFFER PAYMENT PLANS?
Yes! Absolutely. I require 30% of session fee at the time of booking to reserve your birth space and the balance is due at the birth of your baby.
HOW CAN I BOOK YOU RIGHT NOW?
Please fill out my contact form and I will get in touch and confirm my availability for your due date and collect a few more details from you. Easy peasy! We will then make a plan to meet in your third trimester to go over everything in person.
CAN I MEET YOU FIRST?
Absolutely! Please fill out the form below and lets set up a date soon to meet.
What to expect
STEP 1: LET’S TALK ALL THINGS BIRTH!
The first step is to reach out and make sure we will be a good fit for each other and for you to get comfortable with me. I want to make sure that this experience will be a once-in-a-lifetime, so that means making sure you have your questions answered and you are excited to work together. After getting to know more about you as a family and making sure we’re a good fit, we will move on to the booking process.
STEP 2: SAVE THE DATE!
Let’s make this official! We’ll make sure your due date and the weeks surrounding is secured! I require a signing of a contract and 30% down to secure your spot for that month. This is where it can get a little tricky because when it comes to birth, it can be a bit unpredictable. At 37 weeks and beyond, you must keep me updated on everything. Feel free to text or call me late at night, I am officially on call after 37 weeks. During those few weeks I keep my schedule flexible, making sure no weddings are scheduled and sessions can be moved if needed. Once you are in labor, at around 4 cm dilated I will come to you. I will stay with you until baby is here and will capture those fresh moments afterwards.
BUT let’s say your child is much like my daughter, and decided to enter the world within 30 minutes of active labor (oh yes, Madylin did that to me lol), and I don’t make it to your birth. The 30% deposit can be used towards other options. I can still arrive as fast as I can and capture those fresh first moments after birth. I can come an capture your fresh 48 moments. Or if you’d like to put it towards a newborn session, that can be arraigned too. Either way, I will make sure the deposit goes into a photography package for you. This is why I do not accept a full payment until the day of the birth, because birth can be very unpredictable and I will do everything in my power to be there. But sometimes things happen, and it is wise to be mentally prepared for anything. But please don’t let the unknown stress you out. Knock on wood I have not missed a birth yet!
STEP 3: THE BIRTH
As stated before, I will be on call from 37 weeks until your baby decides it’s time to make their appearance. If your having an at home birth, I highly encourage you to book the largest birth package so I can travel to you and be there during the whole time. Depending on where you live, I would hate to miss this birth! If you are delivering in a county outside of Pulaski, I will often stay at a hotel to be near you. We can talk all options and added pricing during our consultation. If you are having an hospital birth, let me know when you have reached active labor (as mentioned in the info above) and I will come to you and be right there next to you. Sometimes I encourage my clients to ask the doctors how they think the birthing process is going. Sometimes things will go quick and other times it could take hours. Either way, I want to make sure I am there for you!
IF you are being induced, the process still goes the same. You will contact me around 4cm dilated and I will be right there for you.
IF you are having a c-section, see if it is okay with your surgeon if you can have a birth photographer in the room with you. Sometimes they will allow it, other times they will not. If that is the case, I can capture everything before and after the c-section for you. You will still value those special moments. I have photographed just two c-sections before. One of those I was allowed in the room and it was such an amazing experience.
STEP 4: GALLERY DELIVERY!
This is one of my favorite parts of the process. After the birth of your baby, I will be working to select the best photos from your day, edit them, and deliver them to you on a beautiful custom flashdrive. From there, you can download, share, and order prints — and relive this wonderful day over and over again!
If you are interested in having your memories preserved in more than just digital format, we will talk through your album, canvas, and print options to get you exactly what you are looking for. I encourage all of my clients to go beyond the screen and make sure their images can be enjoyed in their homes.

Education
Below are some certificates that I have earned through the Photography Academy that I am a part of. These courses have been a huge help in my education and skills towards my birth photography.
